Challenge

Instacart needed to increase Express adoption, reduce checkout friction, and drive repeat usage across both in-app and in-store purchases while preserving speed and trust in a high-frequency grocery experience. Klarna needed a native integration that showcased flexible payments, rewards, and social money movement without disrupting Instacart’s core flows.

Approach

I designed a seamless Klarna integration embedded directly into the Instacart app, centered on immediate value and everyday utility. The experience introduced an Instacart Express Credit Card powered by Klarna, enabling 2X rewards on all purchases including in-store spend, with instant rewards access via InstaCash.

At checkout, users could choose pay-later and split-payment options, while new cash pools allowed friends and families to create shared funds, send instant P2P payments, and collaborate through shared carts for group grocery orders, events, and household shopping. Partner merchant integrations (e.g., Macy’s, Apple) extended same-day delivery beyond groceries while maintaining a cohesive, native experience.

My Role

  • Led end-to-end product design across discovery, UX, UI, and prototyping

  • Designed Instacart Express Credit Card onboarding and rewards education

  • Created in-store and in-app reward tracking for 2X points across purchases

  • Designed Cash Pools, instant P2P payments, and shared cart concepts

  • Defined scalable UX patterns across Instacart and Klarna design systems

  • Partnered with Product, Engineering, Data, and BizDev to align UX to growth KPIs
